A new by-law, if introduced, will prevent the people of Northumberland from carrying out a five hundred year old tradition, claims it fiercest critic Ms Nancy Stupor. The new by-law which will make the shampooing of Goldfish in St. Michael’s Pant, Alnwick illegal, could be in force as early as next month if the council get the go-ahead from the government. A spokesman for the council said that they had “valid reasons” and that the by-law will only apply to those with Goldfish, who are a small minority of the people that use the Pant to shampoo their fish in. Tench, Pike, Halibut, Hake, Cod, Tope, Marlin and Basking Shark are all exempt. Salmon and Trout have been illegal in the pant since the outbreak of the first world war. Mrs. Stupor said that the by-law was “outrageous, my family have shampooed our Goldfish in the Pant for generations, this is a denial of a fundamental human right. What do they think the Pant was built for”. Mrs. Stupor and her supporters are planing to challenge the council in the courts. Last year the council introduced two controversial by-laws, one in Shilbottle, that made the possession of the Tunnocks Teacake illegal in the village and the other that made the consumption of alcohol on the streets of Seahouses compulsory.
