The Craster “Pole man”, Darius Lint is to be awarded the freedom of the village at a special ceremony to mark the fourth anniversary of his assent. The previous record was held by Miss Batinda Mooth who was unfortunately struck by lightning and fell to her death in 1994, after almost a year on the pole. When asked how life aloft had been over the last four years Mr. Lint replied “whey it’s bin champion man, better than beeun at yehm, ya see ahlsorts from up here, av ad a few problems wi bairns hoyin clemmies and a couple of drunks havin a go at the bottom of the pole wey an axe but apart from that it’s bin grand, ad recommend life up a pole ti anyone, it’s sortanly oppend mah eyes. The pole, some eighty feet in height, is considered of great religious significance by the folk of Craster, who for centuries have believed the only path to true enlightenment is up the village pole and those who dwell at the top are almost Gods.Craster Pole Committee chairman Jah Robsaffari said “ this is just what we need here in Craster, what with fishing in decline because of EEC restrictions and tourism on hold due to the foot and mouth crisis, to find we may now have a new messiah in our midst is absolutely bloody marvelous”. Mr. Lint said that he had no plans to come down “na, am stopen where a am hurbs, beein doon there meens nowt ta me nuw, ya wanna git yasell up a pole sun, then yul nah wat arh nah”
